Position: Part-time Web Developer

The Holodomor Research and Education Consortium (HREC) is hiring a part-time web developer to re-design, update, and maintain the HREC website.
HREC promotes the research, study, and understanding of the Holodomor, the Famine in Ukraine of 1932-33. The HREC website (holodomor.ca) is an essential tool for implementing HREC’s mandate, providing authoritative information on the Holodomor and promoting awareness of related events and outreach activities. The website is intended for a wide audience that includes not only academics, researchers, students, and educators, but also the broader public.
Under the general direction of the Executive Director and other HREC staff, the Web Developer will be responsible for the coding, innovative design, and layout of the website. Specific duties include but are not limited to: developing the website in collaboration with HREC staff, ensuring that the end product meets user requirements; recommending technical solutions; interacting with users to establish firm requirements; interpreting project specifications and proposing most appropriate approach; developing design for a variety of platforms; troubleshooting technical problems relating to website development; formatting and uploading new materials as instructed by HREC staff; and organizing the site for optimal functionality and accessibility.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent of education and experience with web development.
3+ years of experience working with WordPress websites and servers.
Demonstrated experience of UI/UX best practices.
Solid knowledge of ARIA/WCAG 2.0 standards – related to Accessibility (https://www.ontario.ca/page/how-make-websites-accessible)
2+ years of experience collaborating directly with designers.
Excellent organizational, analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Works effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Understanding of both graphic design and computer programming.
Knowledge of Ukrainian language is an asset.
The incumbent should be available to meet in person with HREC staff in Toronto twice a month, depending on HREC needs.
Schedule: Part-time; 5-6 hours/week for the first few months of employment; 2-3 hours/week for duration of contract.
This is a one-year term appointment, with possibility of renewal.
Rate: $25.00-$32.00/hour, depending on experience.
